Why Financial Therapy?

Financial Therapy is a process that helps people think, feel, communicate, and behave differently with money to improve their overall well-being including their mental health, relationships, and financial status.

Feeling stuck, uncertain or overwhelmed when navigating financial decisions is common even for those who seem financially successful. Figuring out what matters most, the best next step, or how to do things differently is hard. The answers depend on your unique beliefs about money.

Your financial wellness is heavily influenced by your beliefs about money (what we call “money scripts”) and your money behaviors. Your beliefs can shape your money behaviors and define the trajectory of your life. Your money beliefs are “the way the world works” from your experience. If you have a partner, they also grew up with their own set of money beliefs!

Here are some money script examples:

If you grew up in a family that lost their home in bankruptcy, you might consider buying a home scary. On the other hand, you might believe the only way to have financial security is to buy a home, losing sight that owning a home doesn’t guarantee security. These are two different beliefs that can both hold you back from financial wellbeing when applied inappropriately.

People who grow up with parents who worked a lot in order to give their family “the nice life” often learn to dislike money because it took their parents away from them. Sometimes these children grow up to believe having money means intense sacrifice and not being able to enjoy life. Why would you want to earn or grow money for your future, if you think it means you will miss out on enjoying your life?

Children usually don’t care about living in a nice house, driving a nice car, or taking fancy vacations until an adult/parent tells them that it’s important. As an adult, they feel “people like us live in places, drive cars, or vacation like this” even when they can’t afford it. All these situations create a little voice or feeling inside that says “I’m only worthy if I spend money.” You are worthy no matter what.

“All money beliefs are true…some of the time. ‘Never’ and ‘always’ thinking can hold you back from having the flexibility to make your best financial decisions.”
